Comfortable thongs for women: the criteria that change everything

A comfortable thong does exist: fabric, cotton gusset, rise, elastics and the right size. The criteria that make all the difference every day.

A comfortable thong for women comes down to four things: a soft, stretchy fabric, a cotton gusset, a rise that spreads the pressure, and above all the right size. When these criteria come together, a thong disappears, whether under jeans, under a dress or for sleeping.

Why the thong has a bad reputation

Many women associate the thong with discomfort: a string that cuts in, an elastic that digs into the hips, a synthetic fabric that feels hot. These faults rarely come from the shape itself. They come from a cut designed for looks rather than for wear, elastics that are too tight, or the wrong size.

Yet the thong has a real practical advantage: it leaves no lines under fitted clothes, whether tailored trousers, a knitted dress or leggings. Well cut, it becomes an everyday piece, and many women who have tried one in a soft fabric never look back. You just need to know what to look for when choosing.

What makes a thong comfortable

A soft, stretchy fabric

Cotton jersey is one of the most pleasant fabrics for an everyday thong: soft to the touch, it moves with you. The atelier culotté KITTY and GRRR thongs are in 100% cotton jersey, a “soft and stretchy cotton fabric to see you through your day”, according to their product pages.

Fine stretch lace is another option, lighter and dressier. The EXPRESSO ruffle thong is in sheer brown lace, and its product page promises “a feeling of optimal lightness”.

A cotton gusset

This is the detail that matters most for intimate comfort. Cotton is breathable and gentle on sensitive areas. All three of the workshop’s thongs have a 100% cotton gusset, including the lace design.

A mid-rise

A low-rise thong concentrates the tension of the elastic on the hips. A mid-rise cut spreads the hold better and follows the curve of the stomach. The KITTY, GRRR and EXPRESSO thongs are all cut mid-rise.

Soft elastics

Elastics are the link between the garment and the body. Too firm, they leave marks; too loose, the thong slips. The KITTY and GRRR thongs have decorative elastics, which finish the piece without a stiff seam against the skin.

The right size, above all

A thong that is too small is the main cause of discomfort. The front pulls, the back rides up, the elastic digs in. Conversely, a thong that is too big gapes and moves.

The KITTY and GRRR thongs come in S to XXL. The EXPRESSO ruffle thong comes in S-M or L-XL. A few references from the product pages:

  • Noémia is a French size 36 and wears an S in the KITTY thong.
  • Audrey is a size 38 and wears an M in the GRRR thong.
  • In the EXPRESSO ruffle thong, Noémia (36) and Audrey (38) both wear S-M.

If you are between two sizes, the larger one is often the more comfortable for a thong. All the references are gathered in our size guide.

Which thong for which moment?

  • Every day, under jeans or trousers: a cotton jersey thong, such as the KITTY (white with red hearts) or the GRRR (leopard with red hearts).
  • For an evening or a dressier outfit: the EXPRESSO ruffle thong, in lace, which its product page describes as made “for a soft or spicy night”.
  • For sleeping: a cotton thong paired with the KITTY tank top or the GRRR tank top, in 100% cotton jersey, designed “to see you through your nights”. Their story is told in our article on printed cotton lingerie.

All the designs are gathered in the thongs section. If you prefer a cut with a little more coverage while keeping a high-cut shape, the tanga bloomer is a good alternative: the same cotton gusset, the same mid-rise, but a back that covers more.

Keeping it comfortable

A thong keeps its softness if you look after it well. The workshop’s product pages give the same instructions: wash at 40°C maximum, no bleach, no tumble dryer, and always wash the piece before wearing it. For lace, a gentle wash, by hand or in a mesh bag in the machine, preserves the delicacy of the pattern and the hold of the elastics. Then leave it to dry flat, out of direct sunlight. All the steps are in our article caring for your lingerie and swimwear.

Each thong is sewn by hand by Chloé in her workshop in Andoins, in the south west of France. A pattern maker by trade, she designs her cuts “to reveal, never to constrain”, which is a good definition of comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thong really be comfortable?

Yes, if it is in a soft fabric, with a cotton gusset, a suitable cut and the right size. Most discomfort comes from a thong that is too small or elastics that are too tight.

Which fabric is best for a comfortable thong?

Cotton jersey is soft, stretchy and pleasant every day. Stretch lace is lighter and dressier. In both cases, a 100% cotton gusset is best for intimate comfort.

Should I size up for a thong?

Not always, but if you are torn between two sizes, the larger one stops the thong from pulling or leaving marks. The model references on the product pages help you find your size.

Can you sleep in a thong?

Yes, if you feel good in it. Choose a soft, breathable cotton thong, such as the KITTY and GRRR jersey designs.
